This is the first time the four "[REC]" films have been domestically released on Blu-ray, and their 1080p transfers do not disappoint. "[REC]" and "[REC] 2" are both shot found-footage style with handheld digital video, the intermittent pixelated roughness of the image intentional. Even so, there is a surprising uptick in image detail and depth, and confident black levels. "[REC] 3: Génesis" and "[REC] 4," meanwhile, are more conventionally shot and, as a result, more stylistically and aesthetically refined. There is a tangible dimensionality to these latter entries, most notably in the outdoor, daytime wedding sequences of "[REC] 3: Génesis," the MVP of the set and the one with the most pleasing clarity. "[REC} 4" is altogether grittier, set primarily on a ship amid the choppy open seas, but there is a richness to its image resolve, its unmistakable high-def surface textures, and its shadow detail. There is no detectable print damage on any film in this set, aside from what is purposefully rough in the first two features.
Each "[REC]" film infects Blu-ray with both Spanish 2.0 DTS-HD and fuller, more immersive Spanish 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio tracks (all with optional English subtitles). In addition, the first "[REC]" also offers an English-dubbed 5.1 DTS-HD track. These are lively, active, immersive aural presentations with effective, at times nerve-jangling, surround activity as the chaos of the infection spreads around its protagonists.

For head-scratching reasons, the four-part "[REC]" series has never been released on Blu-ray in the U.S.until now. Scream Factory has pulled out all the stops for this special occasion, providing a beautiful boxset featuring each film housed in its own case, excellent high-definition transfers, and an almost exhaustive bevy of bonus content (audio commentaries, feature-length documentaries, deleted scenes, etc.). This is a must-own release for horror buffs.
